The End Of Live Streams? Facebook limits live streamed performances
Since Covid-19 started spreading many musicians became out of work. The days of performing weekly at bars, clubs, and other venues seemed to end almost abruptly due to lock-downs. One way many musicians have combated this was to start live streaming their performances. DJs appeared to stream the most (because everyone is a DJ now it seems) on streaming platforms like Instagram, Twitch, and Mixcloud Live. Facebook was a huge platform for musicians to stream their performances, but this might change. In Facebook's new terms and conditions they now state that they will be cracking down more on copyright infringement.
Copyright Infringement is when you use someones intellectual property (in this case music) without their permission for commercial or non-personal purposes. In layman's terms DJs can no longer play music that is not their own without getting their live streams taken down or worse their pages deleted. Facebook also has said live streams, and videos can't be used to create a “music listening experience”. A “music listening experience” is very vague and could mean a number of things. These updated terms and conditions could hurt a lot of musicians who make a majority of their income on Facebook. Hopefully Facebook will add more context to their updated terms and conditions.
